Enhancing Data Confidence at Pembina with FLOWCAL VCF

For over 30 years, FLOWCAL has helped oil and gas companies ensure the accuracy and integrity of their measurement data. It’s the trusted system for gas and liquid measurement data validation, balancing, and reporting and continues to deliver trusted results for long-time customers like Art Heinrichs, Senior Measurement Analyst at Pembina. Watch a video of Art here.

Recognizing the Right Fit

When Heinrichs joined Alliance Pipeline, now Pembina Pipeline, in 2015, the company was going through a reorganization and needed to re-evaluate its back office measurement solution. Although he had personal ties to a competing system, FLOWCAL quickly set itself apart.

“I noticed FLOWCAL was always at the industry events,” Heinrichs says. “They were aggressive in their industry participation, and we noticed that. That was a very positive step.”

A Feature That Made an Impact

In the video, Art shares how FLOWCAL’s Volume Correlation Factor (VCF) helped catch a long-standing issue early. By flagging inconsistencies in the flow computer calculations, the VCF uncovered errors that had been quietly affecting their data for too long. This early detection not only prevented larger measurement discrepancies but also justified an upgrade to new flow computer technology.

He recalls a striking example:

“When we started seeing VCF errors, we discovered our flow computers were actually making mistakes. FLOWCAL caught it. When we raised the issue with the vendor, they said, ‘No one else is complaining.’ But we had the evidence. We presented it—and today, our flow computers are all updated and corrected.”
